Quiz Bowl Teams Earn First at Middle School Invitational

On November 2, Greenhill sent more than 40 students to St. Rita Catholic School to compete at the Spartans Middle School Invitational.

Congratulations to Greenhill B – Ella Bogdanow ’31, Cam Dawson ’30, Beck Fuller ’30, Miles Hulme ’29, and Aarav Mehta ’29 – for winning the tournament! Each team in the tournament was placed into one of three pots and played a round-robin with seven rounds. The result of these seven matches determined playoff placement. Greenhill B emerged undefeated during regulation with big wins over St. Mark’s School of Texas A and Cistercian A. They entered the playoffs as the #3 seed where they defeated St. Mark’s School of Texas B in the quarter-final match.

In the semifinal match, they faced Coppell West A. After 20 tossups, nothing separated these two great teams, so a tiebreaker was required with the first change in score resulting in a victory. Cam Dawson quickly answered the toss-up, earning Greenhill B their ticket to the final round.

The final was a rematch between Greenhill B and Cistercian A. The Hawks began the match by earning 150 unmatched points. Typically, this is not a great sign. However, the Hornets closed the gap and opened a lead that Cistercian could not close by the final set of bonus questions.

Greenhill A – Blake Clark ’29, Colin Houpt ’29, Evan Huang ’29, and Adam Tawil ’29 – advanced to the semifinals, always a major achievement in a stacked field. They finished with a record of 7-1 and posted the tournament’s highest PP20TUH (points per 20 toss-ups heard).

Greenhill C – Louie Bader ’30, Leo Garza ’30, Elliot Whitten ’30, and Carson Yoo ’30 – finished the day with an even record, placing 10th out of 24 teams in the Main Division. They contested several close matches that could have gone either way, and they advanced to the final of the secondary playoff bracket.

Greenhill D – Max Carona ’30, Kaden Dubé ’30, Nithya Rao ’29, Berkeley Robins ’30, Austin Yao ’29, and Aiden Zendeh Del ’30 – finished 13th and played a solid day of Quiz Bowl.

ELEMENTARY DIVISION

Congratulations Greenhill E – Yusuf Ashraf ’31, Everett Davies ’31, Spencer Hanu ’31, Chait Mohan ’31, and Simon Weinstein ’31 – for winning the elementary division (only open to 5th and 6th graders). The team put together a stellar performance, finishing the day with a perfect record of 8-0.

Another impressive feat for Greenhill is that in a field of 12 teams, Greenhill captured the top four spots. Congratulations to Greenhill I and Greenhill G for tying for second place, and congratulations to Greenhill F for finishing fourth.

• Greenhill G: Khalil Iyer ’31, Vihaan Kumbhani ’31, Anay Patel ’31, Brett Slavinsky ’31, and Caleb Vagefi ’31.
• Greenhill F: Shaina Bekal ’31, Eleanor Briant ’31, Aarna Gandhi ’31, Fiona Ou ’31, and Stella Vigushin ’31.

Greenhill H – Aditi Rao ’31, Roman Rousseau ’31, Dittu Tandon ’31, and Rebecca Yao ’31 – also had a fantastic day, and their final two matches were decided by a margin of 10 and 5 points. If one thing had gone differently in each round, all five Greenhill teams would have taken the top five spots.
