Video Production 

In Greenhill’s video production program, students write, produce, shoot, and edit their own films. They learn the language of filmmaking and the meaningful role digital storytelling and media play in the world. 

• Middle School
• Upper School

Middle School (7th – 8th Grade)

Seventh- and eighth-grade students are offered the opportunity to take an Introduction to Digital Media and Video Production course where they learn how to watch films with a discerning eye and have their first opportunity to write and produce a film as a large group. 

Skills Developed: Understanding digital platforms, introduction to professional video editing software, manual settings on professional cameras and sound equipment, basic filmmaking techniques, teamwork in a production setting, and introduction to scriptwriting.

Upper School (9th – 12th Grade)

Through electives such as Video Production and Advanced Video Production, students start to learn the history of cinema and its impact on culture, learning to analyze films critically. They start to create more complex projects, delving deeper into the technical aspects of filmmaking. They may also choose to specialize or engage in a yearlong filmmaking project in electives like screenwriting or by completing a capstone in film production. 

All students taking Advanced Video Production (AVP) or higher-level courses enter their work products into film festivals or engage in other forms of public screening. 

Skills Developed: Understanding of film history, genres, and techniques; development of analytical skills; advanced editing techniques, sound design, lighting, and cinematography. Understanding of screenplay format, character development, dialogue writing, and story structure. Working as individuals within a larger group to share and workshop ideas, footage, and edits.
