MATHCOUNTS Team Advances to State Competition
Congratulations to the MATHCOUNTS team for competing at State this month and to all the students who competed at the Chapter competition.
During this school year, more than 30 students have been attending weekly MATHCOUNTS practices under the direction of Coach Eric Schoonard (MS Math) and Coach Jason Zuffranieri (US Math). This included more than 20 students from grades 6-8 who vied for the coveted 12 spots to represent the school at the Preston Trail Chapter competition and a few fifth-grade students who wanted to hone their math skills in a competitive but fun environment. The Chapter competition, held in February, consisted of over 200 students from grades 6-8 from Plano and other nearby areas of North Dallas. Students competed as an official school team of 4 or as individuals, with the top 7 teams and the top 10 highest-scoring individuals who weren’t part of an official school team advancing to the Texas State MATHCOUNTS competition. Individual Chapter competitors included Andrew Zheng ’29, Justin He ’29, Vivianne Wang ’30, Eric Guo ’30, Ian Zhao ’31, Lily Qiu ’31, Emma Li ’31, Livia Perel ’31, with Andrew, Vivianne, and Livia all finishing with the top score among Greenhill’s individuals. Greenhill’s official school team of Aarav Mehta ’29, Anderson Tsao ’29, Austin Yao ’29, and Adam Tawil ’29 finished in third place overall in this very competitive competition. Each player made the top 40 overall, with Aarav’s 12th-place finish earning him a spot in the exhilarating Countdown Round – a head-to-head competition where the faster solver wins. Aarav upset both the 5th-place and 4th-place finishers before falling to the eventual runner-up in the semifinals. With the third-place finish, the team advanced to the State competition held in early March. Texas is a very competitive state for MATHCOUNTS, having won the last two National titles, so the team had their work cut out for them. But they delivered good results across the two individual tests and the cooperative team test, finishing in 17th out of more than 50 teams. Individually, Austin placed 64th and Aarav 77th in the state. Congratulations to all the students who competed this year! We look forward to seeing what next year brings. |
