Greenhill Mourns the Loss of Two Community Members
Greenhill mourns Jeanne Baker, Lower School Librarian from 1979-1999, and John Green ’55, a member of the original student body.
The Greenhill community is mourning the loss of two members, Jeanne Baker and John Green ’55. JEANNE BAKER She was hired in 1979 by Head of School Phil Foote and became the first African American member of the school’s academic teaching faculty. Upon assuming her duties as librarian, she set about nurturing a new generation of readers. It was her mission to expose young students to “a variety of authors and cultures.” In 20 years in the Montgomery Library, Baker transformed the collection with voices and topics far ahead of their time in most school libraries, and her warm smile and calm demeanor nurtured thousands of blossoming bibliophiles on the Hill. In 2022, Jeanne was recognized as a Heart of the Hill Hero, having Blue 11 named after her. JOHN GREEN ’55 He was born on May 17, 1937, in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in Dallas. In 1950, he started attending Greenhill School, being one of its inaugural students and graduating in 1955. His next stop was the University of Texas in Austin, where he earned a degree in business and graduated top of his class. On June 15, 1957, John married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Georgie Fulton. The dynamic duo were married for 65 years until her death in December of 2022.
