Greenhill Hosts Quiz Bowl Invitational

Congratulations to the 13 students who competed at the Greenhill Fall Invitational on October 19.

Last month, 13 Greenhill students competed at the Greenhill Fall Quiz Bowl Invitational. Sixteen teams from six area schools participated in this first contest in the 2024-2025 North Texas circuit, which usually includes 5-6 tournaments in the area.

The 16 teams were split into two divisions of eight teams before play began. Within each division, a full round robin was played, with the top three teams from each division entering the Gold Group, the next three teams entering the Silver Group, and the remaining two teams put into the Bronze Group. Each team in Gold/Silver played the three teams in their group they had yet to play, while the Bronze teams played a full round robin. Greenhill had three teams competing:

  • Greenhill A – Maya Jagsi ’26, Henry Lipnik ’27, Kate Ponnambalam ’26, and Ayan Thombre ’26 – competed in the Gold Group and earned a fourth-place finish with a 7-3 record.
  • Greenhill B – Blake Clark ’29, Cameron Dawson ’30, Colin Houpt ’29, Evan Huang ’29, and Adam Tawil ’29 – finished in sixth place in the Gold Group with a 4-6 record.
  • Greenhill C – Itamar Friedman ’25, Garrett Koerner ’25, Mayer Sidikaro ’25, and Jack Stone ’25 – finished in 16th place after competing in the Bronze Group.

The questions used were an “A-set” from National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT), the sanctioning body. A-sets are generally considered easier than the Invitational Sets that the teams will be hearing later in the year, which makes for some high scores and exciting games. The top teams at this event qualified for the High School National Championship Tournament put on by NAQT which will be held in Atlanta in late May 2025.

Special note: It is important to emphasize how much effort the staff, coaches, and teams put into the event. It is a lot of work to put on such a contest, and it would not have taken place without the hard work and long hours of the volunteers. A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this tournament a success!
