National Merit Scholarship Corporation officials announced the names of more than 16,000 Semifinalists who have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 6,870 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $26 million offered in the spring.

These students, along with more than 1.3 million students, entered the scholarship program by taking the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in their junior year. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level. About 95 percent are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
