Greenhill Mourns Genie Burke, Greenhill history teacher from 2006 – 2023, who passed away peacefully on May 19, 2024. In her 17 years at Greenhill, Genie had a tremendous impact on her students. She taught United States history, AP Government, and a Cold War elective that she designed. Her classes – especially her electives – were always popular because of her passion for the material and her ability to engage the students in new and exciting ways. In addition, Genie’s leadership among students and colleagues enhanced the Upper School experience for students and colleagues alike. She served as Ninth-Grade Dean, earned the Faculty Leader Award in 2014-2015, and sponsored many clubs, including the Hope Squad during its inaugural year. During her tenure as Ninth-Grade Dean, Genie brought structure and clarity to the position, ensuring that all incoming ninth-graders had a consistent, thoughtful, and welcoming experience during their first year in Upper School. Genie will be remembered for her warmth, her commitment to her students, and her willingness to help in all areas of the school. We offer our deepest sympathy to Genie’s family, including her father Edmund Burke, her brother Edmund Burke III, and those in our Greenhill community who knew Genie.
