Greenhill Hosts 20th Annual Estelle Dickens Drive

In September, Greenhill held our 20th annual Estelle Dickens Drive to collect school supplies for George H.W. Bush Elementary in Dallas ISD.

Greenhill School recently partnered with United to Learn to collect supplies for George H.W. Bush Elementary in Dallas ISD for our 20th annual Estelle Dickens Drvie. This year's drive was more important than ever, with Bush's student population rising by 185 students for the 2024-2025 school year! The Greenhill community donated:

  • 147 Notebooks
  • 334 scissors
  • 495 dry-erase markers
  • 1,017 markers
  • 3,453 pencils
  • Miscellaneous items such as clipboards, folders, crayons, sharpies, and more.

The drive – named after Estelle Dickens, who served Greenhill for 44 years (1960-2004) in a variety of positions including a fourth-grade teacher and Head of Lower School – started on Founders' Day (September 11) and ended on September 30.

At the Founders' Day assembly, Chloe Nguyen '25 spoke about Ms. Dicken's lasting legacy at Greenhill.

"She had a lifelong passion for education and was even more devoted to instilling this love of learning in her students," Chloe said. "What’s more, her student advocacy extended far beyond Greenhill’s gates. Her reach influenced the broader Dallas community as well. Outside of school, Ms. Dickens tutored children in math and reading. Whether they were a Hornet or not, she was determined to ensure that every student had the opportunity to succeed academically.

"Although Estelle Dickens is no longer with us, her impact continues to resonate today," she continued. "Helping others wasn’t what she did, it’s who she was. This drive offers us, the Greenhill community, the chance to carry on her legacy by supporting the education of students around Dallas.

The Estelle Dickens Drive started in the fall of 2005 as a way for students to commemorate Ms. Dicken's passing in 2004.
