Greenhill Community Celebrates the Eclipse

Greenhill students and employees were ready for the eclipse on April 8 with a day full of activities and curriculum.

Safety was an overarching subject in all our divisions, especially in Preschool where students crafted their glasses to have extra, personalized protection in the form of a plate. Lower School students learned about the eclipse and were able to enjoy eclipse-related activities and crafts, and Middle and Upper School students rotated through the stations around campus, including the 6th Grade Museum Exhibits, Poetry and Myths Station, Art Exhibit, and Astronomy Fair.

ART EXHIBIT
Fine Arts embraced the eclipse spirit in the Here Comes the Sun: An Artistic Survey of the Great North Texas Solar Eclipse. Middle School and Upper School Fine Arts students had their work displayed in the Fine Arts Building and the Marshall Performing Arts Center. Participating classes included: Prek-12 Visual Arts classes, MS 7/8 Grade Advanced Photography, 6th Grade Science and Photography Program Collaboration, US Painting I, 6th – 12th Grade 3D Studio Arts, 5/6 Grade Studio Arts, 7/8 Grade Figure Drawing, and US Digital Arts.

However, the arts didn’t end there. On April 8, Honors Photography hosted several stations of large format/medium format cameras that captured the transition of the Sun. The cameras performed Solargraph images that will create an image on black and white photographic paper that will then be inverted to create a photographic positive.

ASTRONOMY FAIR
Greenhill also had special guests from Bucknell University on campus. The 17 undergraduate students were studying the sun’s corona, which could only be done during the totality of the eclipse. While they were here, they hosted Astronomy Fair booths for students to conduct eclipse-related activities about physics and astronomy. Students were able to look through solar telescopes – like a sun-spotter to learn about sunspots – to learn about the difference between solar and lunar eclipses and their positioning.

After lunch, the Greenhill community gathered around campus to view the total solar eclipse, a truly special experience for all.
